According to him, and with some verification on Basketball Reference, the Celtics have a record of 8-2 when he has five or less field goal attempts. The are 1-4 when he shoots more than five times, and are additionally 0-3 when he chucks up seven shots.

However, the Celtics' recently finished game against the Utah Jazz did not follow this trend. Boston followed up their huge win over the Toronto Raptors last night with a disappointing loss against a struggling Jazz squad, 98-86. In connection with the trend, Smart only took four shots on the night, so the stat above is now updated to 8-3.

Regardless of what the record shows, this is still telling of Boston's fate as they may be much better off with other players taking up Smart's allocation of shots. Smart is not really going to light opposing defenses up on the score board. The five year man out of Oklahoma State is only a career 35.9 percent shooter from the field. In addition, he is shooting just 34.7 percent from the floor this season, while averaging a career-low 5.5 points per game.

Smart's calling card, in fact, is on defense. He is one of the toughest and most disruptive players in the league on that end of the ball. Nevertheless, Smart knows his place in Boston, and that is to be the team's anchor on defense. That's the reason why the Celtics chose to extend him this past summer.
