Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash asked Dirk Nowitzki to join him on the team's coaching staff after taking the job, but the NBA legend and Dallas Mavericks icon politely declined.

In an interview with Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News, Nowitzki revealed why he didn't join Nash on the Nets as an assistant NBA coach.

“First of all, I don't know if I could do it anywhere but here (Dallas Mavericks),” Nowitzki said. “Second, I just think the timing is not right. I love being with the family. I'm so over basketball at this point that it wasn't even a thought for me.”

Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash are very close friends. They played together on the Mavs and were a lethal dynamic duo before Nash joined the Phoenix Suns in 2004.

With Nash coaching and superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving leading the way on the court, the Nets are expected to contend for the NBA title next season. Brooklyn is already the betting favorite to win the East in 2020-21 despite Nash having no coaching experience under his belt.

However, Durant and Irving are two of the best scorers in the NBA and the Nets have a solid supporting cast around them, led by DeAndre Jordan, Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie and Jarrett Allen.

While it would have been fun to watch Nash and Nowitzki coach together on the Nets, the Mavs great is enjoying his time away from the NBA after playing for 21 years in Dallas.
