Back in their days with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kevin Durant already knew of James Harden's abilities. Since then, Harden has grown into one of the most potent scorers in NBA history. But for Durant, Harden's defensive skills have always been there too.

After the Brooklyn Nets' 124-120 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, Durant shared his thoughts on the underrated part of Harden's game. Per Michael Scotto of USA Today, Durant recalled their stint with the Thunder when Harden showcased his defensive abilities. He also understood that when Harden had to carry much of the offensive load with the Houston Rockets, his defense had to step back a little.

Clips of Harden's seemingly poor and lazy defense have made rounds all over social media in recent years. But based on data, The Beard is actually a decent defensive player. Last season, he averaged 1.8 steals per game, which ranked fifth in the entire NBA. In the 2018-19 season, he averaged a career-best 2.0 takeaways per outing, finishing second behind Paul George. He can also hold his own defensively one-on-one with his deceivingly strong physique.

Against the Clippers, the former MVP showcased his post defense against Kawhi Leonard. Harden used his wide chest to wall off The Klaw, who was forced to take a tough fadeaway shot.

The Nets as a whole, however, need to improve their defense as they've ranked in the lower tier of defensive ratings since acquiring James Harden.

Kevin Durant can only hope that his comments can translate into more effort in stopping opponents.
