The NBA will be switching from Spalding to Wilson as the official basketball of the league, starting with the 2021-22 season. Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant is none too pleased with the announcement.

Durant responded “Oh hell Nah!!!” to Yahoo Sports reporter Chris Haynes' Instagram post regarding the news:

The Nets star might have had a visceral reaction, but if Haynes' report is any indication, he — and other players throughout the league — will not need to worry about the specifications of the new ball:

The same leather and product specifications will be used to produce the new ball with the assistance from the NBA and NBPA, which will create a player advisory board to offer suggestions. Wilson basketball engineers, product designers and player insights specialists will work with the NBPA advisory board to create the new game balls.

Haynes also reported the NBA and Spalding mutually agreed to part ways, ending a relationship which will have spanned 38 years. Wilson was actually the NBA's partner before Spalding took over in 1983.

Players certainly seem to have a special relationship with game balls. The Nets forward and others will often ask the ref to see the ball prior to tip-off, though that is also likely just an established ritual for a number of players.

Regardless, it appears Wilson is very amenable to player suggestions and input. After all, they do want to give the league the best product they can offer.

The ball might change for the NBA's 75th anniversary season, but Durant — who will be healthy for the Nets next season — will still have one last go around with the classic Spalding ball.
