Charlotte Hornets rookie Malik Monk was cited by police for careless driving in a car crash in Arkansas. According to a report from TMZ, Monk “was driving near the University of Arkansas around 5:46 AM when his red 2002 Lexus ran off the road and crashed into a gate.”

Police added that he had no proof of insurance as well.

In a statement to the police, Monk said, “I was driving, looked down for a second then I just hit a bump. Happened fast.”

There were no reports of any injuries resulting from the accident and he was able to “retrieve his personal items which included money, basketballs, shoes and jerseys.”

Monk hasn’t lived up to the hype surrounding him since being selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. He is averaging a mere 5.0 points on 33.5% shooting and 1.2 assists for the Hornets while playing in 12.1 minutes per game.

Prior to the trade deadline, the Bucks were interested in acquiring Monk but the Hornets were undecided whether to keep him or move him to another team. It’s likely that they decided to give the rookie a chance to develop rather than give up on him so quickly.

Monk played his best game versus the Bucks when he scored 25 points in a 126-121 win on November 1. In that game, he displayed the potential that made him a lottery pick when he exploded for 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Hornets to the win. Three games later, he had 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field including 5-of-13 from the three-point line.
