The Dallas Mavericks will be facing the Miami Heat, and in some way, they got some encouraging injury news. After being out for the past few weeks, Anthony Davis was upgraded to doubtful on the injury report against the Heat, according to Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News. There's a good chance that he doesn't play, but it seems like he's making the necessary steps to come back at some point, maybe even later in the week.
Before their game against the New Orleans Pelicans, head coach Jason Kidd noted that Davis was doing great, and there seems to be nothing but positive things coming from his rehab.
About over a week ago, it looked like Davis was going to return soon, but Patrick Dumont wanted more data on his injury before putting him back on the floor, according to ESPN's Tim McMahon.
“Sources: Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont has requested medical data indicating that Anthony Davis is not at risk of aggravating his left calf strain before giving a green light for the 10-time All-Star big man to return. Will miss seventh straight game tonight,” McMahon wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
That may have been the best approach, especially when looking at the injury history of Davis. Since getting traded to the Mavericks, he's barely been able to play because of injuries, and there's no doubt that it has set the team back. They're missing one of their best players on the court who can make a difference on both sides of the ball, and they're also missing Kyrie Irving, who probably won't come back until later in the season.
The Mavericks have suffered because of those absences, and they're near the bottom of the Western Conference because of it. Other players have had to step up, such as Cooper Flagg, PJ Washington, Max Christie, Brandon Williams, and more.
