Smith Jr. is in his second year as the Mavs starting point guard. As a rookie he played very well, averaging 15.2 points per game as well as 5.2 assists.
This season, however, Smith hasn't played as well with Luka Doncic. His defense is very poor off the ball and often finds himself in the way. Smith isn't much of an off-ball scorer either, and often needs a full head of steam off the dribble to score.
Article Continues BelowSmith has spoken about his fit this year in the Maverick's offense. He's slowly learning how to fit in:
(I’m) a lot more comfortable”I’ve got a better understanding for my teammates. And now I’m in a position to where I can really understand how a game’s going. Whether it’s me getting into the paint, or if I need to be here, or if I need to get this guy here a shot. You know, just things like that. I’ve learned it.”
Smith has improved statistically this season though. He's taking three fewer shots per game and is also hitting shots at a more efficient clip. He's averaging 13.0 points per game, 2.4 rebounds and 3.o assists per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from beyond the arc.
The Mavericks are 16-18 on the season and currently sit 11th in the NBA's Western Conference. They will face off next against the Oklahoma City Thunder this upcoming Sunday.
