Kristaps Porzingis made his debut with the Mavs in Wednesday night's 108-100 season-opening victory over the Washington Wizards. The 7-3 Latvian played well, but he says he isn't where he wants to be just yet.

The Mavs acquired Porzingis from the New York Knicks this summer. However, it wasn't clear when he'd be ready to play, as he had to recover from a knee surgery due to an injury he sustained in February of 2018. He's recovered enough to play now, though, and he's looking to help his new team in any way he can.

Porzingis missed his first four shots of Wednesday's game, but he managed to score nine points in the final minutes of the first quarter. In his 29 minutes of playing time, Kristaps racked up 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting form the field (3-of-7 from beyond the arc), four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Luka Doncic led the Mavs in scoring with 34 points and nine rebounds.

“I'm still getting there,” Porzingis told ESPN's Tim MacMahon following Wednesday night's game. “I'm not where I want to be, but I'm getting there, and I have to be content with the game I had and the game we had. We won the game in the end. That's most important. For the first game, for myself being out that long, I think I did pretty OK.”

The Mavs will be back in action on Friday night, when they'll travel to New Orleans for a matchup against the Pelicans. Tip-off inside the Smoothie King Center is set for 8:00 p.m., with ESPN having live broadcast coverage.
