Through the first month of free agency, veteran big man Nerlens Noel has found himself still on the open market looking to land his next deal.
However, the 23-year-old's situation has become quite frustrating as his status as a restricted free agent has limited the amount of interest in him around the league. In light of that, Haley O'Shaughnessy of The Ringer is reporting that while Noel is still waiting for a serious offer from the Dallas Mavericks, there is a possibility that the organization could further mismanage the situation given their past history.
But will they lose the goodwill of a 23-year-old — who sees players like Joe Ingles, Derrick Rose, Udonis Haslem, and Mike Muscala all sign before him — in the meantime? The organization is known to manage these negotiations without emphasis on relationships — just ask Chandler Parsons. Their parting unveiled the unpleasant reputation attached to Dallas over time. As Andrew Tobolowsky of WFAA.com diagnosed it, “There’s a fine line between negotiating well enough not to overpay and making a player feel unwanted, and the Mavs have pretty much fallen over that line face-first every time they’ve tried.”
Although the market has continued to dwindle down and narrowed his options for possible suitors, the Mavericks could find themselves in a similar situation to what happened to Chandler Parsons. He had originally planned on re-signing with the team but felt undervalued which lead him to take a larger deal elsewhere with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Dallas has already begun to enter that territory with Noel, who has grown highly frustrated with the entire situation. However, where his free agency experience is different lies with him being a restricted free agent.
This allows for the Mavericks to essentially match any offer another team presents, which in itself may discourage other potential teams from giving him an offer sheet. It also doesn't help that there is a lack of interest in him around the league. On top of that, the front office is unwilling to meet his request for an annual salary of $20 million.
Things may have increasing grown frustrating for Noel, the Mavericks ultimately control the fate of his NBA future.
