There is some talk that Detroit Pistons coach and team president Stan Van Gundy could lose at least one of his roles after the season if the team's outlook does not change.
Vam Gundy has been both the president and coach for four years, but the Pistons have not done much since then in a relatively weak Eastern Conference. He managed to get Blake Griffin in a trade this year, but Detroit is still on the outside looking in when it comes to this season's playoff picture.
A recent report from Mitch Lawrence of Sporting News stated that Van Gundy will need to get the team to the playoffs in order to keep his coaching job, and will likely be out of his role as team president regardless.
But Van Gundy has not been told about anything regarding his job status for either position, per Rod Beard of the Detroit News.
“Nothing has been said, so I won’t even comment on that,” Van Gundy told The Detroit News Friday. “I don’t have any idea. It’s Tom’s team and he’ll make whatever decisions he wants to make and we’ll go from there. Nothing has been broached with me, so I’m not even going to comment on it.”
It's a tough situation for Van Gundy. He's a very good coach but usually, if a team doesn't make measurable progress, the organization will fire the coach. In terms of his role as president, it's hard to be both at the same time.
Doc Rivers of the L.A. Clippers recently was relieved of his role in basketball operations so he could focus only on coaching. Perhaps the same can be done for Van Gundy, but he will likely have to get the Pistons to the postseason in order to have a chance at that.
