If I wrote this article last week, one early overreaction would be the Golden State Warriors will break the NBA single-season record for wins–a record the franchise already holds. But there are still plenty of things to overreact about this season, especially with the team playing so well and improving by the day.
Warriors Overreactions
3. The Warriors will win the championship
One of the biggest overreactions you see from fans is winning the championship. The idea of winning the 2021-22 NBA title isn't far-fetched, but when you talk about winning one without Klay Thompson and James Wiseman healthy, it starts to become a joke.
The regular season is one thing, but winning it all is another. The Warriors will not only need Thompson down the stretch, but Wiseman might be equally important. When you are playing against the top teams in the league who have really good centers, productive minutes from Wiseman could be the difference between advancing or being eliminated. He's the only seven-footer on the roster, and his size will be necessary for big games.
That doesn't mean he needs to put up huge numbers, but he must match the opposition's output to some degree. Although the team is 5-1 so far, size will eventually become a problem without Wiseman.
Article Continues Below2. Benching Jordan Poole
The subsequent overreaction is benching Jordan Poole. He's not putting up the numbers he did in the preseason, but a flurry of games of him scoring will eventually happen. Once it does, fans will soon be talking about the Poole party again. When you are 22 years old, bad games happen more often. Holding him to the standard of a brilliant two-week preseason stretch is unfair. It doesn't mean that won't happen in the regular season.
Damion Lee is playing tremendously, and he's in the closing lineup in place of Poole. Maybe that doesn't change, but it's not because he's better or not. It's a chemistry thing. Lee's experience works better at the moment to close games, so he will continue to get those minutes as long as he stays productive. If Poole has it going, there won't be any hesitation on Kerr letting him close because he is a really good player.
1. Stephen Curry choking in 4th quarters!
The last thing that's an overreaction is the lack of scoring production from Stephen Curry. Too much energy gets invested on the topic of closing games. It was three straight games he didn't score in the fourth quarter, but they only lost one. Sure he will need to be a scoring weapon all four quarters, but nobody is perfect. All of the great scorers had stretches where they didn't score late in the game. They also had games where they did.
Three games of Curry going scoreless isn't a big deal when he's bound to have an outing where he scores 20 plus in that period. That will happen sooner than later, as he is already showing glimpses of his superior scoring ability.
The list can go on and on with overreactions, but today, we are stopping at three. The Warriors are back in action Wednesday night at home against LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. They hope to push their record to 6-1 and continue their hot start to the season.
