On paper, Mike Brown is quite an accomplished coach. The winning percentage and the Coach of the Year plum certainly boost his resume.
But outside of that, the current assistant with the Golden State Warriors has received a lot of flak for his coaching ability. For as good as a defensive tactician he is, the offense simply appears to be rocket science for him. At least, that’s what popular opinion tells us.
In an article by Monte Pool for CSN Bay Area, Brown addressed the notion about himself.
“It’s the perception that’s out there. It’s tough to fight. So I just kind of smile and go with the flow.”

Brown referred to his first tenure in Cleveland for a sample of his work on the offensive end.
“But as time goes on, we start to work more offensively. It’s evident if you look at our growth in Cleveland. We started out as a defensive team. But by the end of my tenure there, we were a top-five, top-10 offensive team in most major categories.”
“It’s a battle that I don’t choose to fight. I know in the past, some of the teams I’ve had have ranked very high on the offensive end of the floor. We wouldn’t have had the success we had as a unit if we weren’t good offensively. You have to have a balance.”
Fact still remains that Mike Brown is one of the best minds when it comes to defensive concept, and learning under Steve Kerr can only benefit his own offensive schemes.
