Golden State Warriors All-Star Kevin Durant will likely miss the entire 2019-20 season after rupturing his right Achilles tendon in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes that his absence will have a great impact on the league.
In an interview with Rachel Nichols of ESPN ahead of Game 6 of the NBA Finals, per Royce Young, Silver said Durant's injury is a huge loss for the NBA. He also wished nothing but the best for the 10-time All-Star.
“I feel, of course, for him personally. I think beyond that, as a league, we're only as big as our players, and he's one of the greatest stars in the league, so it'll be a huge loss not to have him. Of course, having said that, other players will step up, but he's a unique player. I think the caliber at which he plays, the spirit and the passion he brings to the game, puts him in that very elite category. So all we can do is root for him to come back at full speed, and I know it won't be for a lack of effort on his part. I'm sure he's going to begin rehabbing the moment his doctors allow it.”
Prior to him playing in the Finals, Durant has already suffered a calf strain in the same leg earlier in the playoffs. There have been speculations that he already had an Achilles injury back then, and him deciding to play in Game 6 just made things worse.
Durant is already 30 years old, so a career-altering injury at this stage of his career means it's possible that he will no longer be the same when he returns.
Of course, everyone is rooting for him to come back better than ever, including Silver. However, only time will tell if he can truly bounce back.
