Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has steered his team back to the NBA Finals, where they will meet a very familiar face in the form of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. James has just been a force of nature this season, especially in the playoffs in which the Cavs forward is playing out of his mind. It’s safe to assume that “stopping LeBron James” is among the top priorities Kerr has listed for the Warriors. If the Warriors could slow down James, it would put them in a tremendous position to repeat as NBA champions.

Of course, that’s going to be easier said than done, but if Steve Kerr managed to successfully stand in the way of the great Michael Jordan at least once during his playing career, then the Warriors surely could do it against James.

Here’s Kerr telling the story of that one time he hilariously locked down Jordan.

“I do remember though one time I guarded him when I was in Cleveland. He faked right, faked back left, and went right, and I stayed right in front of him but only because I went for the first fake. We came to the bench and Lenny Wilkens said ‘Guys, did you see what Steve just did? He stayed in front. That’s what you have to do.’ I said, ‘That’s right guys. Come on.’ I was literally still going for the first fake and it came right back to me. That was my highlight.”

James is all the Cavs got in the series against the Warriors, who are loaded with All-Stars. Even if Kevin Love gets a green light to play in Game 1 after missing Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics, the Cavs will only go as far as where James takes them.

The Warriors also have better defenders to throw at James than Wilkens had against Jordan during that game Kerr was talking about, as they have the likes of Draymond Green and Kevin Durant to shadow the four-time league MVP.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is this Thursday at Oracle Arena.
