Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson will have his college jersey retired by Washington State University, athletic director Pat Chun announced on Twitter last Friday night.
Thompson will join former WSU center Steve Puidokas as the only other Cougars basketball player to have his number retired. Puidokas, who played in Pullman from 1973-77, had his No. 55 jersey retired near the end of his senior season with the university.
In a letter obtained by the Seattle Times, Chun wrote to Thompson, saying that the recognition is much deserved by the three-time NBA champion.
“This is in recognition of the extraordinary basketball career you’ve had both during your time in Pullman and during your professional career. The charitable work you and your family have done impacting youth in our country and the Bahamas through education and fitness is admirable. We appreciate all you’ve done for WSU and how you continue to represent us globally.”

In his three seasons in Pullman, Thompson finished third on the school’s career scoring list, with 1,756 points. He also ranks third in career scoring average, at 17.9 points per game, and in career field-goal attempts at 1,414. Thompson finished second in both career 3-point field goals (242) and 3-point attempts (620).
Chun hopes to bring Thompson to one of the school's basketball games next season.
After his stellar performance in college, Thompson went pro and became one of the best shooters in NBA history. This isn't going to be the last time that someone will retire Thompson's jersey, as when all is said and done, the Warriors will surely hang his number in the rafters of the brand-new Chase Center.
