People within the Golden State Warriors reportedly insist it’s wiser to find out what center DeMarcus Cousins has early in the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors since Toronto is such an unknown opponent, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
During Wednesday's Finals media day, Cousins sounded like a guy who is ready to play. The Warriors are listing Boogie (left quad) as questionable for Game 1, which is on Thursday in Toronto.
Article Continues BelowIt sounds like they’re leaning toward a Game 1 activation for Cousins and some type of test drive. That could mean he gets the start. That could mean he anchors the offensively starved second unit at the start of the second and fourth quarters. Could mean both. Could mean neither.
But those within the Warriors insist it’s wiser to find out what Cousins has early in this series because Toronto is such an unknown opponent. This isn’t Houston or Portland, two known foes. It’s a completely foreign matchup. The rules of engagement have yet to be established.
Is Cousins going to be rusty? Absolutely. He hasn't played since Game 2 of the Warriors' first round series against the Los Angeles Clippers.
If Boogie struggles early on, Steve Kerr might have a short leash with him since this is the NBA Finals and not a regular season game. The Warriors coach recently said that it might be difficult for him to ease back Cousins' return given what's at stake in every game.
