After a brief period of jubilation, reality came crashing down hard on New York Knicks and Rangers fans. After reports surfaced that team owner James Dolan may be preparing to sell the teams, these reports were quickly shot down. According to Ian Begley of ESPN, Madison Square Garden released a statement that read:

“There are no plans to sell the Knicks or the Rangers.”

The collective groan from New York City could be heard for miles. Dolan has long been considered one of the more unlikeable owners in all of sports. The Knicks have been irrelevant for the better part of the last 20 years and many Knicks fans attribute this to incompetence at the top of the organization.

A bad owner can become a curse on a franchise. While players, coaches, and people in the front office come and go, the team owner can stick around through the ups and the downs. With a bad owner, the ineptitude of the organization has seemingly no end in sight.

Whether he is responding to angry emails from fans, ordering Charles Oakley's ejection from the Garden, or hiring Isiah Thomas, James Dolan has made some questionable decisions for the Knicks.

But with the new regime led by Steve Mills, Scott Perry, and David Fizdale, maybe the organization is poised for a turnaround. Dolan has vowed that he will take a hands-off approach and allow his current staff to run everything from a basketball perspective.

Fans can only hope this much is true because it's clear that Dolan is staying put in Madison Square Garden.
