It has been a tough road to recovery for Miami Heat shooting guard Dion Waiters. After undergoing surgery on his ankle nearly one year ago, the 27-year-old continues to be out of commission, without a clear timetable for his return to action.

In his piece for Sports Illustrated, Rohan Nadkarni described the struggles Waiters had and continues to go through as he works his way back from the most testing phase of his entire career.

His injury has taken its toll on Waiters not only physically, but psychologically as well.

“All of it put him in a dark place,” says Waiters’ closest friend, Rashawn “Bub” Cunningham. “He didn’t go out much. He got a taste of what it would be like to lose the game.”

Waiters' fall from grace was literally quick and painful, as his ankle injury came at a time when he was arguably playing the best basketball of his NBA career. After a huge first season with the Heat, the 6-foot-4 guard was looking to have the same success the following year before disaster struck.

Waiters himself admitted that it has been a long and painful journey for him.

“I was battling stuff within myself,” he says. “Everything was taken away. When this happens, you find out how much you really have to dig to get back.”

The good news is that Dion Waiters appears to be taking the right steps towards finally making his debut this season. While he still does not have a firm timetable, he was reportedly able to participate in practice already, albeit in a limited degree. We're all getting behind Waiters here, and let's hope he makes his triumphant return to the court sooner rather than later.
