Miami Heat shooting guard Dion Waiters practiced with the team on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing left ankle surgery in January.

According to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel, it wasn't a full-contact practice for Dion Waiters. However, it's still a positive turn of events given how long the scoring guard has been out. The 27-year-old swingman played in only 30 games last year.

“He's doing more work right now,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said on Tuesday. “He's getting better, making progress. Basically, right now it's day-by-day evaluations, but he's doing a lot more on the court, which is good.”

Waiters averaged 14.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game last season while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from beyond the arc. There were rumors that the Heat were trying to trade Waiters in the offseason. He has three years and roughly $36 million left on his contract.

The Heat could really use Waiters right now. Miami is averaging just 106.8 points per game, 23rd in the NBA. One thing we know about Waiters is he can score in bunches and loves to shoot the ball. The Heat are 13-16 on the season, good for ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
