Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t too sure if he would truly retire after the latest NBA season, but the outpouring of love from the fans and his own health caused him to end his playing career. According to the legendary superstar, however, Nowitzki feels like he probably could have come back for at least one more season if he was just in slightly better health.

Speaking to Zac Crain of D Magazine for a profile on the NBA star, Nowitzki admitted that his chronic foot problems gave him too many issues throughout the year. “It’s just the foot gave me problems all the time, even in good games,” he said. “At times in the second half, I’d make a shot and I’d come down and it would be shooting in my foot. It just wasn’t fun anymore. You know? Unfortunately.”

Nowitzki went on to say that he thinks he could have made it at least one more year, especially with the likes of Kristaps Porzingis now being on the Dallas Mavericks. However, he ultimately admitted what many players do, that if the game is no longer fun, then it’s time to move on.

“I think mentally, I could do another year. Especially with [Kristaps Porzingis] coming back, it would be exciting time for me to be there. You know? Just try to help wherever I can, but if it’s no fun anymore and I can’t do what I want to do, then it’s time to go.”

Nowitzki will retire as one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA, and also one of the most lovable superstars the game has seen in some time. With him gone, the Mavericks will still sport plenty of talent, as Porzingis and Luka Doncic look ready to try and bring the Mavericks back to another NBA Championship chase.
