One day after video footage circulated showing J.R. Smith beating up a looter who was trying to break into his car in Los Angeles, the former NBA guard admitted that he's “disappointed in himself” about the incident.

Amid the protests that spread across the city of Los Angeles (and the nation) on Sunday, Smith caught a white man in a black suit attempting to break the windows of his parked vehicle. The video shows Smith accosting the looter and proceeding to beat him up, including kicking and punching him several times.

Smith told Pat McAfee he was returning from handing out waters to the peaceful protestors in his neighborhood when he found the man breaking into his car on his L.A. street. Smith noted that he's the only black person who lives on his street.

In his initial comment on Instagram about the incident, Smith didn't hold back the emotion. “One of these motherf***king white boys didn't know where he was going and broke my f**king window in my truck…I chased him down and whooped his ass…He didn't know whose window he broke and he got his ass whooped.”

On Monday, he lamented how he handled the situation. “I'm 34 years old I have 4 little girls at home.,.Regardless of the fact whether it was right or wrong…I don't want them to have the image of their dad being capable of doing that” the former Sixth Man of the Year winner admitted to McAfee.

The 34-year-old last played in the NBA for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019. He's currently a free agent.
