New York Knicks power forward Bobby Portis believes RJ Barrett is going to have a stellar NBA career.
Portis, who signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Knicks in free agency, says Barrett has “unlimited potential.”
“[Barrett] could be a really great player in this league,” Portis told Alex Kennedy of Hoops Hype. “He scores the basketball well, defends well and rebounds at a high level. Julius [Randle] and I are 24, so we’re still young but we also have experience. We’re not “veterans” yet because we’re still pretty young, but we’ve been around for a little while now. I think we can help the young guys by being around them every day, helping them do the right things each and guiding them each and every day.
“We’re going to show them the ropes and things like that. With RJ, I think the sky is the limit for him. He really has unlimited potential.”

At Duke, RJ Barrett averaged 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 45.4 percent from the field, 30.8 percent from beyond the arc and 66.5 percent from the free-throw line. The rookie got off to a slow start at Summer League, but finished very strong. The Knicks aren't expecting Barrett to be an efficient scorer right away in the NBA. It will take a few years for that to happen.
Bobby Portis will be a good guy for Barrett to lean on during his rookie season. The 24-year-old is a tough guy who doesn't back down from anyone and always plays with a chip on his shoulder. That's the type of mentality the Knicks want to see Barrett play with.
