New York Knicks rookie R.J. Barrett had a pretty rough showing in the NBA Summer League, especially in terms of his shooting. ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla simply called Barrett play like he saw it: inefficient.

Fraschilla added that, while Barrett certainly has a bright future in the league, this is exactly what the 19-year old may look like in his rookie campaign, per Adam Zagoria of Forbes.

Barrett played in five Summer League outings. Through those five games, the no. 3 overall pick in the 2019 draft averaged 15.4 points on a total of 26-of-77 shooting – an abysmal 34 percent clip. Despite his shot going sour, Barrett found other ways to contribute with averages of 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

The Canadian-born swing man started off with a rough 10-point, 5-rebound performance in his Summer League debut against the New Orleans Pelicans, where he shot an atrocious 4-of-18 from the field. He followed that up with eight points and 10 rebounds while shooting an even worse 3-of-15 mark from the floor.

However, the positive with Barrett is that he eventually found his footing and got better as the Summer League went along to help the Knicks finish with a 2-3 record. In his final three games, Barrett averaged 19.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists, while shooting at a much better 43.2 percent clip from the field. All in all, he netted three double-doubles and three 10-rebound contests throughout the tournament.

While inefficiency could be the expectation for Barrett in his rookie season, Knicks fans shouldn't worry about his shooting woes for the long-term. Rookies tend to take some time in adjusting to the physicality of the NBA game. Barrett will surely experience plenty of ups and downs throughout the 2019-20 season.
