After being awarded on Monday night as the MVP of this past season, Russell Westbrook was in a very joyous mood and was ready to celebrate it. However, he was quickly reminded by reporters about the big decision he has to make about his future with his team, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Needing to make up his mind whether to sign a max contract extension worth $207 million or not, The Brodie was asked what he's leaning towards doing come July 1. Westbrook acknowledged that he is aware of it, but also admitted, via Brett Dawson of The Oklahoman, that he's not thinking of it yet, as he is still on high after being named the MVP.
“Man, tonight is so important for me, and obviously with the contract and stuff coming up, it's not really on my mind at the moment honestly. I’m just overwhelmed with a tremendous amount of blessings I've been able to get to be able to get this award. Man, I’m just thinking about tonight, and then after that, I’ll move on.”

This could be seen as a concerning development for the Thunder, as well as their fans, but the star point guard also did not talk much about the contract he signed last year, and just surprised many when he agreed to it quietly, which will have him stay in Oklahoma City for at least one more season with an option for a second.
He can become a free agent after next season if he is unwilling to sign the extension expected to be given to him on the first day of this summer's free agency. Should that happen, the Thunder might need to consider trading him instead, to make sure they get something in return for his services and avoid losing their franchise player for the second consecutive year.
