Deandre Ayton has been exhausting headlines over the past 24 hours all thanks to his game-winning heroics for the Phoenix Suns in their Game 2 bout against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night. As it turns out, however, even Ayton himself was a bit confused right after he scored that epic alley-oop.

By his own admission, Ayton said that he wasn't actually well-aware of the rules covering his game-winning dunk. The Suns big man honestly had no idea if the basket had counted:

“I didn’t even know the NBA rule or that it wouldn’t be an offensive interference of the basket,” Ayton said, via Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. “I didn’t know I could touch it above the cylinder. I heard the crowd. But I was wondering if it counted. I tried to act like I had been there before.”

These are one of the things we love the most about Ayton. His honesty and naive innocence are an absolute breath of fresh air. Plus, The Suns center is a pretty good basketball player, too.

Ayton then went on to explain how he struggled in trying to keep a straight face throughout the drama:

“But at the same time, I really wanted to know if I made that basket,” he added. “I wasn’t too sure what was going on. But then they said I made it and there was a lot of emotion and screaming. There was so much going on and I was just waiting for the officials to come out with the final confirmation with what the call was.”

Ayton just made his mark in NBA playoffs history with that jaw-dropping game-winner. That was definitely one for the books — and one that just took the Suns a step closer to the NBA Finals.
