The Portland Trail Blazers were in control for much of Tuesday night's showdown with the Los Angeles Clippers but lost in part because of faulty officiating.
Portland led by a single point with under 10 seconds to play when Clippers star Paul George drove on Blazers guard CJ McCollum. The referees blew the whistle after McCollum appeared to hit George with the body, giving PG13 two shots at the foul line. George made both attempts, and McCollum missed his ensuing game-winning try.
But McCollum never should have been called for the foul. The NBA's Last Two Minute Report from Tuesday night's game states McCollum made “marginal” contact with George, with said contact not impacting the latter's speed, quickness, balance, or rhythm (SQBR).

Of course, it matters very little now. The report will only leave more of a sour taste in the mouth of McCollum and the Blazers.
Portland is really struggling as it desperately tries to maintain seeding in the Western Conference. The Blazers have now lost four of their last five and seven of their last ten, falling to the No. 6 seed in the West and maintaining just a 1.5-game advantage over the Dallas Mavericks. Moreover, star point guard Damian Lillard has missed each of the last three games with a knee ailment.
A win over the Clippers on Tuesday would have gone a long way in stopping the bleeding. Instead, Portland has to add another to the loss column before turning right around to face the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.
