Portland Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic thinks a play-in tournament for lower-seeded teams to enter the 2020 playoffs would be a neat idea if the season resumes.
Per Jabari Young of CNBC, the NBA could decide to cancel the remainder of its regular season and create a play-in tournament if the coronavirus pandemic dies down and sports are able to be played again.
During an interview with Dwight Jaynes of NBC Sports Northwest, Nurkic talked about the play-in tournament idea:
“I think that's really good for everybody,” Jusuf Nurkic said. “I think it's going to be really good for fans. If there's gonna be tournament from 7-11, it's going to be really, really tough for everybody.
“But for us, I think it's going to be fun.”
The Blazers were in ninth place in the Western Conference standings prior to play being suspended due to COVID-19. The Blazers were 3.5 games back of the Memphis Grizzlies for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.
If the season resumes, Nurkic will be in the lineup for the Blazers. The 25-year-old was scheduled to make his season debut on March 15 against the Houston Rockets, but the season was suspended after Utah Jazz All-Star center Rudy Gobert's positive coronavirus test.
Before he suffered his horrific leg injury last season, Nurkic was averaging 15.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 blocks for the Blazers. He was also shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the free-throw line.
