San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich can walk away from the game right now and spend the rest of his life at a lakeside cabin and still has his place in history secured. He further solidified his Hall of Fame credentials Sunday when he guided the Spurs to a 112-95 win at home over the Phoenix Suns.
It was the Spurs’ sixth win of the season, but more notably, it was Popovich’s 1,156th career regular-season win.
With that, Popovich has now surpassed former Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers mentor Phil Jackson for sixth in the all-time wins list for NBA coaches.

Unlike Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich racked up all his coaching victories with only one team, the Spurs, whom he has also steered to five NBA titles.
Speaking of titles, Popovich still trails Jackson’s collection of 11 rings, but that shouldn’t diminish the magnitude of Popovich’s recent accomplishment.
Gregg Popovich now needs just 19 more wins to tie George Karl for fifth in the winningest list and 54 more to get a share of fourth place with Pat Riley.
