A person close to Tim Duncan was reportedly “caught off guard” Duncan wanted to be an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, according to Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.

However, the same person said Duncan is a “gym rat,” misses the camaraderie of an NBA team, and likes being around Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

Tim Duncan is the best player in Spurs franchise history and is largely considered the greatest power forward in NBA history. Now, the future Hall of Famer will let his voice be heard from the bench. All the players on San Antonio are going to bond with Duncan very well since he's got a great personality.

As we all know, Duncan had a legendary run with the Spurs. The 15-time All-Star won five titles, two MVP awards, two Finals MVPs and was the 1998 Rookie of the Year. In 1,392 games with the Spurs, Duncan averaged 19.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.2 blocks while shooting 50.6 percent from the field.

San Antonio fans are now hoping Duncan can convince two other Spurs legends to come to the bench: Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. That would be quite the scene if the three Hall of Famers became assistant coaches together under Gregg Popovich.
