When DeMar DeRozan decided to re-sign for the Toronto Raptors on a lucrative new five-year deal, one of the first things he did was let his close friends and teammate Kyle Lowry know all about it.

Two-time NBA All Star, Lowry was on a trip thousands of miles away from Toronto in Scotland, playing golf with his friends. According to Holly MacKenzie of Raptors.com, Lowry was pleased to hear the news when DeRozan called him but jokingly questioned the reason for the call. Lowry seemingly did not expect his buddy to go elsewhere but would have been there for him no matter what.

“I just felt like it was the right choice for him,” Lowry told MacKenzie. “He was going to make his decision based on him and his family and like I said all year, all the time, I’m always going to support my friend. He’s my friend first and foremost. He’s a guy I respect and I truly love. Whatever decision he made, I’d be happy for him, but I’m happy he made that right decision.”

Lowry also praised the Raptors organization for doing what they could to keep DeRozan on board.

“He knew what he wanted. I think our organization did a good job of making sure they gave him what he needed and rewarding him for all the work he’s put in.”
