The landscape of the professional sports world in 2020 changed when Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus.
Although–in hindsight–it might have been the case that each major sports league would need to shut down, Gobert's positive test carried a certain sense of immediacy to the situation.
Gobert gave an update on his condition. He thanked health care officials in Utah and Oklahoma City while giving the usual PSAs about washing hands and taking precautions. Gobert also said he wishes he had taken the illness more seriously:

The Frenchman was the talk of the sports world when he tested positive. Particularly in light of the fact he had “jokingly” been touching reporters' microphones and recorders during his individual media session this past Monday. The NBA had been taking steps to create distancing between the media, players and coaches; something Gobert totally neglected.
Gobert has profusely apologized for his actions multiple times, and he vowed to donate $500,000 to the arena workers affected by the work stoppage.
