Throughout the season, Klay Thompson has been asked about a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, and although he hasn't talked a lot about it he has said the same thing every time, that he wants to continue to be a Warrior.
Klay Thompson says he wants to stay. Per sources, he backs it up by talking contract extension with Warriors — which would keep him off the market https://t.co/J7iWQNPxjW pic.twitter.com/cKw0IJy6zg

Now it appears that he is putting his money where his mouth is, and talking with the Warriors about getting that extension done, according to The Athletic San Francisco.
For the Warriors, it makes sense for them to get a contract extension done now, instead of waiting until he becomes a free agent, and the max contract will be a lot more.

If Thompson was to sign an extension this offseason, the most he could sign for would be a five-year deal worth $121 million.
If the Warriors waited for him to hit the open market after next season, the number would skyrocket. The max deal he could sign after next year would be around five years and $188 million.
Klay Thompson understands to keep the team together and continue the success they have had, the Warriors probably can't afford the $188 million dollar deal. They, however, could afford the $121 million dollar deal so if Klay is really wanting to stay, and is willing to take the pay cut it makes the most sense to get the deal done this offseason.
According to The Athletic and sources close to Klay Thompson, it wouldn't be a difficult decision for Thompson to leave over $60 million on the table to stay in a place he loves.
