According to those in the know, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley has a new Baker Mayfield in Spencer Rattler. More on that in a second, though.

The college football landscape will look different this year as the Pac-12 has postponed play to the spring, while the Big Ten season is still somewhat up for grabs.

But the Big 12 is plodding along, and Lincoln Riley's Oklahoma Sooners team should be among the favorites to win the conference.

Lincoln Riley has established something of a quarterback factory at OU. Two former No. 1 picks — Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray — have come through the system, and Jalen Hurts was drafted in the second round this past April.

Now, Riley and Co. will hand the reins to a redshirt freshman.

Spencer Rattler will get the call under center, and Oklahoma Sooners teammate Brayden Willis likened his charisma to that of Mayfield (via Nick Kosko of 247 Sports):

“He’s a great leader and he’s done a great job getting us ready to go day-in and day-out, bringing energy to the offense,” Willis said. “You know, a little Baker Mayfield energy. It gets everybody hyped to play.”

College football analyst Joel Klatt said Rattler should be in good hands under the watch of Riley, who schemes for his quarterback's style as well as any coach in the country (via Kosko):

“Spencer Rattler, who was named the starter this week, is eminently capable. He’s a heck of a player, very talented and I think he fits Lincoln Riley very well. It should be noted also that Lincoln Riley fits his quarterback about as well or better than anybody in the country, meaning that he will tweak his offensive system in order to showcase the ability of his quarterback.

Rattler will hope to lead the team to a national title after the Sooners lost in last year's CFB playoff, and he is already evoking a “dangerous” mentality, akin to Baker Mayfield.

Lincoln Riley will be there to mentor him every step of the way.
