Jared Dudley, who's played for six different teams in his wayward career, understands as well as anyone how impressive the Brooklyn Nets' rise to respectability over the last few years has really been. Still, the 12-year veteran is fully aware of the inherent advantages the New York Knicks will have over the Nets this summer as both teams try to sign max-level free agents.

“It's advantages and disadvantages,” Dudley said, per Ian Begley of ESPN. “The advantage the Knicks have is the history. There's a lore that they have about playing in the Garden, you know, having that Knicks jersey, even though they might not have been good for the last, you know, 15, 20 years and stuff like that. But it's the Knicks. It's like the Lakers. When I played for the Clippers and we were the three seed, they were talking about the Lakers.”

Dudley, a prospective free agent, went so far as to say that Knicks owner “[James] Dolan could burn down Manhattan and they're going to talk about the Knicks.” Despite a built-in fan base and inevitable media coverage, though, Dudley nevertheless sees several reasons why the Nets might be a more attractive free agent option than the Knicks – and not just because of Brooklyn's superior young core.

“I'm pretty sure over there with the Knicks there's a little more media to deal with, a little more scrutiny,” Dudley said. There's less scrutiny here, and that's just how it is…

“Practice facility,” he continued. “If you want to be here in Brooklyn, if some players want to live in the city and you can drive 10-15 minutes to practice, or do you want to go all the way to Westchester and take an hour and have a driver? You know what I mean? There's a lot of different stuff, man.”

New York famously created enough space to sign two max free agents by trading Kristaps Porzingis in February. Brooklyn, meanwhile, will also be among the league's leaders in cap space, though much of it is likely to be spent on a new deal for breakout All-Star D'Angelo Russell.
