According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie has decided that he will undergo surgery on Monday to repair torn ligaments in his right thumb.

Woj added that Dinwiddie heeded the advice of two specialists regarding his injury, and both recommended surgery. With this, Dinwiddie is expected to be sidelined for three-to-six weeks.

Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson recently reported that his lead reserve guard considered postponing surgery at the end of the season. But obviously, it appears like Dinwiddie opted to listen to his doctors and get this over and done with.

This is such a bummer for the Nets, which is making their bid to return to the playoffs this season. After losing promising young swing man Caris Levert earlier this season, they also lose another one of their rising stars in Dinwiddie. Fortunately, both are still expected to return at some this season. However, that bid might be more challenging now that they lose their Sixth Man for a pretty significant amount of time.

Dinwiddie struggled to find his way around the league early in his career, but has found a home in Brooklyn. He is easily having a career year this season, thus this must be a frustrating for the 25-year old guard.

Dinwiddie has been one of the best reserves this season, and is making a strong bid for Sixth Man of the Year. In 49 appearances this season, he is averaging 17.2 points on 46.1 percent shooting, while adding 2.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game .

The back court tandem of Dinwiddie and D'Angelo Russell has helped launch Brooklyn into the 6th seed so far at this point of the season. Now that Dinwiddie is sidelined, it looks like Russell will have a heavier offensive load to carry.
