More than a few folks questioned the Brooklyn Nets' intentions earlier in the season when they decided to keep Spencer Dinwiddie past the trade deadline instead of using him as a trade chip to further bolster their star-studded squad. As it turns out, the Nets actually had a twisted reason behind their “loyalty” to the 28-year-old guard.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, it's very much possible that Brooklyn's intentions on Dinwiddie weren't completely pure. That is, that the Nets never really saw him as a key part of the team's future:

Sources tell B/R part of the reasoning for Brooklyn keeping Spencer Dinwiddie past the trade deadline was the Nets' ability to sign-and-trade their combo guard for another piece in their star-studded rotation. Dinwiddie could also return to the Nets.

If this is true, then it's likely that Brooklyn listened to offers for Dinwiddie prior to the deadline. They probably slapped a huge price tag on him knowing full well that an offseason trade was still a viable option for them.

Dinwiddie, who is set to enter free agency in the summer, has already proven on multiple occasions that he's more than capable of being a team's number one option (or number two?) on offense. That's clearly not going to be the case for him with the Nets, so at this point, it really makes sense for the team to try and move him in the offseason in exchange for one or two key rotational pieces.

For his part, though, it will be interesting to see where Dinwiddie ends up next season. Will he finally get a chance to shine on a new team?
