The Arizona Cardinals took the field for their third preseason game this past week, which notably did not see rookie quarterback Josh Rosen on the field due to a thumb injury that he suffered in practice last Monday.
It has now become an ongoing process for the Cardinals, with head coach Steve Wilks still weighing whether Rosen will take the field in the final preseason action against the Denver Broncos on Thursday night, according to Kyle Odegard of Azcardinals.com.
Article Continues BelowRosen’s status for Thursday’s preseason finale against the Broncos is undetermined. “We’ll re-evaluate it this week and determine whether or not I want him to play in that last preseason game,” Wilks said.
The Cardinals are clearly taking a precautionary approach with the 21-year-old to ensure that he doesn't get hurt further ahead of regular season action. It may just be a minor thumb injury, but the team doesn't want him to be dealing with any lingering issues and could rest him for the final preseason game. Rosen proved over the first two games that he has a promising future ahead of him, demonstrating poise in the pocket while making accurate throws down the field.
This also all but cements the starting job for Sam Bradford to begin the season, as he has been in the driver seat for that spot for much of the offseason. Bradford has played well in his limited action that should see him get the first crack and show he can lead the team to success in 2018.
In the meantime, Arizona will continue to monitor Rosen's health over the next couple of weeks. What should be noted is that he was able to throw the ball prior to last week's preseason game, which is a strong indicator that he isn't far off from being healthy enough to play if called upon.
