Throughout much of training camp, Sam Bradford has had a grip hold of the starting quarterback job for the Arizona Cardinals ahead of rookie Josh Rosen.

According to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, the Cardinals are expected to give Rosen some first-team snaps in the Week 2 action of the preseason against the New Orleans Saints.

Sam Bradford will get more work in this week’s preseason game, but the Cardinals want to see rookie Josh Rosen with the first unit, too, coach Steve Wilks said Monday.

This will give Rosen more much-needed experience ahead of his rookie campaign that could help him make a stronger case to start. In the first preseason game, the 21-year-old had shown some flashes of potential with some of the throws he made tallying up 41 yards on 6-of-13 completed passes. He will have a chance to build upon going up against some of the first-team starters for New Orleans, which holds one of the better young secondary units in the league.

The Cardinals have continued to speak highly of Rosen throughout training camp that has even led to Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson has been among the most vocal about the UCLA product's performance on the practice field. This playing time in the preseason is an opportunity for him to show how much command he has over the offense while showing if he can handle that increased responsibility.

Beyond that, this simply a chance for the Cardinals to better prepare their rookie quarterback for what could be the starting job at some point this season if Bradford struggles or deals with an injury. There is plenty of optimism around what Rosen could bring to the table under center, which this situation could strengthen that notion future while opening the gate to more first-team action in preseason play beyond that.
