The Buffalo Bills had a legitimate starting quarterback in Tyrod Taylor. Yet, for some reason, they still felt the need to experiment with other options such as quarterback Nathan Peterman last season.
Needless to say, the decision did not pan out like they wanted to. However, according to Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, head coach Doug McDermott is still confident in Peterman's potential:
“I’m confident that he is wired the right way and he’ll learn from the moments both high and low that did or didn’t go his way,” McDermott said. “He’s an extremely confident young man and a guy that works hard. Sometimes as a rookie, in this case as a rookie quarterback, you’re thrust in a situation where everyone sees your body of work. I know his second year will be better than his first year. I thought he did some really good things his first year. When you look at the DNA, he’s a fit for us in that regard.”
Peterman's first career start could not have gone any worse. He threw five interceptions in the first half versus the Los Angeles Chargers and it was not long before he was back on the bench. One would think that a performance like that would have crushed his chances at another start. However, it appears Peterman managed to show enough promise in the weeks that followed before the injury.
Regardless of how sincere the confidence truly is, Peterman now has a chance at a fresh start going into the 2018 NFL season. Although Buffalo may have invested in selecting quarterback Josh Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft, all reports indicate that the starting job is up for grabs going into training camp. If there is one positive that came out of Peterman's tumultuous 2017 campaign, is that he could not possibly endure a worse performance than what he did versus the Chargers.
