The Buffalo Bills had a competition all summer for the starting quarterback job, and it ended with coach Sean McDermott naming second-year quarterback Nathan Peterman the starter for Week 1. There have been many questions about whether or not Peterman is the right man for the job, especially with the way he played last year, but McDermott thinks the quarterback has earned the chance.
“I thought his total body of work all the way back from the spring through the summer and fall camp to this point, he has certainly earned the right,” Sean McDermott said, via WGR Radio.
Peterman impressed during the preseason by completing over 80 percent of his passes, and it looks like he has taken a big step forward from last year. Peterman threw five interceptions in his first career start last year, but while that is concerning, McDermott actually thinks it's going to make him stronger.
“I believe he's a resilient young man,” McDermott said. “He's certainly come through some times of adversity throughout his career. Look, he's still a young player. I've been impressed with his mental toughness, his command of the offense, the way he's generated yards and points in the preseason, as well, and the way he's developed to this point.”
After trading away AJ McCarron to the Oakland Raiders, only Peterman and first-round pick Josh Allen are left on the roster at quarterback. The Bills have said they want to bring along Allen slowly, so it's actually not much of a surprise that Peterman got the starting nod.
