Elijah Holyfield has found a new home. The former Georgia running back and son of legendary boxer Evander Holyfield is signing with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent, according to David Newton of ESPN.com.

As Newton points out, Holyfield's father had said recently he was hoping his son would get to play in Atlanta, where he grew up. Instead, he'll get to play against the Falcons twice a year with their division rivals. The Panthers have said repeatedly they're looking to reduce Christian McCaffrey's workload this season. McCaffrey had an absurd amount of touches last year, and the team doesn't want to run him into the ground.

As such, they've been casting a wide net in their search for backs they can pair with McCaffrey. Last year they had C.J. Anderson, but they released him after just a handful of games as McCaffrey took over the offense.

Holyfield had a productive career with the Bulldogs, but he wasn't seen as a great pro prospect. He ran a slow 40 time and isn't very fast. Fortunately for him, the Panthers don't have much behind McCaffrey at the moment.

Cameron Artis-Payne is still on the team, but he hasn't done much in his four years in the league. The Panthers aren't particularly high on him, and he isn't a lock to make the team. Carolina also drafted Jordan Scarlett out of Florida in the fifth round, who Holyfield will be competing with this summer.

Scarlett was only a fifth-round pick, so the Panthers aren't too tied to him, and Holyfield could easily beat him out. With their lack of depth, it's also definitely possible that both backs could make the roster.
