In what was a spectacular start to the 2017 NFL season for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has since turned into a disaster. Not only are the Chiefs in the midst of a three-game losing streak, but back-to-back embarrassing performances by the offense have now begun to raise red flags in Kansas City.

There has even been speculation that Kansas City could potentially turn to rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes. According to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride, head coach Andy Reid is adamant that Smith will remain the starter:

“Without getting philosophical, and I’m not sitting here with a crystal ball or projecting things like that, that’s not how I roll,” Reid said. “We’ve all got a responsibility to do our job at all positions, starting with me, and that’s not getting done the right way. Right? It’s not one guy, and that has to be understood. It’s not one person. We’ve all got to pull together as a football team, in this case, an offensive football team, right now, and get that taken care of as a team. Not one guy. And that’s about as clear as I can be.”

In all fairness, the Chiefs offense has not had much success in any area over the last two weeks. As Smith's numbers have plummeted, so have rookie running back Kareem Hunt's. Hunt began the year on a historic pace for yards from scrimmage; however, he mustered up just 17 yards on 11 rushing attempts while catching one pass for nine yards in Week 12 versus the Buffalo Bills.

After going through the first half of the 2017 NFL season without an interception, Smith has since thrown four over the last three games. If the veteran quarterback is going to confirm Reid's adamancy about his starter status, he will need to bounce back next week against the New York Jets.
