After emerging as runners-up last season, the Kansas City Chiefs are shoring up their defense by signing defensive tackle Jarran Reed to a one-year deal on Sunday. The 28-year-old DT, who spent the last four seasons as a starter for the Seattle Seahawks, agreed to a contract worth $7 million with $5 million guaranteed, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

The short-term move allows Reed to enter the market again next year after being cut by the Seahawks earlier this week. The signing of Reed already got the stamp of approval from Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who posted an interesting GIF upon hearing the latest news.

As evident in last season's Super Bowl LV loss to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Chiefs need help with their defense. And they need it bad. While Reed is not the immediate answer to their shortcomings defensively, his arrival is certainly a good development for the Andy Reid-mentored squad.

In his final season for the Seahawks, Reed recorded 38 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 14 quarterback hits in 16 regular season starts. Those numbers aren't exactly eye-popping but it was a terrific bounce-back year for the Alabama product.

Reed, of course, was a wanted man in the NFL and the Chiefs reportedly had to beat out seven other teams for the chance to bring him in. The Seahawks wanted to retain his services the upcoming season but was unable to afford both Reed and fellow defensive end Carlos Dunlap.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, will be looking to reclaim their lost glory, and having Jarran Reed on board is indeed a good start.
