The Cleveland Browns have plenty of work ahead of them if they hope to spark a potential resurgence in the 2020 NFL season. The top priority for the new coaching staff will be getting quarterback Baker Mayfield back on track following an abysmal sophomore slump.

Despite all the talent at his disposal, Mayfield had seemingly regressed under center. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt says the onus will fall on the new regime to ensure his success, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk:

“We’ve got to put him in the best position to have success,” Van Pelt said.

There is certainly plenty of truth to Van Pelt's comments. The Browns opted to go with the offensive-minded Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach to assist with Mayfield's development into a bonafide franchise quarterback. Van Pelt will obviously play an integral role in making that happen.

Mayfield managed to fit the billing as a former No. 1 pick during his stellar rookie campaign. This resulted in plenty of hype surrounding Cleveland once they added wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to this star-studded cast on offense. Unfortunately, head coach Freddie Kitchens was unable to take full advantage and it had a profound impact on the young quarterback's progression.

It is encouraging to see that Van Pelt is still optimistic about Mayfield's future as the cornerstone of the Browns. Despite coming off a disappointing 2019 NFL season, the pieces are still in place for this team to bounce back.

Of course, any hope they have for success will first need to start under center.
