It sure does look like Cleveland Browns stars Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr are on the same page early on in training camp.
Video of training camp shows Mayfield launch a 50-yard bomb to Beckham, with the second-year Brown making a spectacular catch while being double covered.
While the pass could have been better (it was a little wobbly in the air) the precision of the pass to get it into a place where only Beckham could catch it shows how much Mayfield has worked on his accuracy. The two defenders guarding Beckham, Sheldrick Redwine and Donovan Olumba put of a valiant effort to stop Beckham from catching the pass, but could not overpower Beckham. The pass is a great indication of the chemistry the two are developing – the trust Mayfield is developing in both himself and Beckham, and the recovery Beckham is making following surgery for a sports hernia.
Odell Beckham Jr. is looking to do better in his second season with the Browns. In 2019 he had his fewest receiving yards and touchdowns in his NFL career outside of an injury shortened 2017. Last season he had 1.035 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. While the hernia certainly slowed down his production, Beckham will not be one to make excuses for his play and will use his limited production as motivation for having a better season in 2020.
Baker Mayfield is also looking to rebound from a disappointing 2019 season, almost throwing for the same amount of interceptions as touchdowns, with 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
Both are looking to help the Browns make the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
