The Cleveland Browns' disastrous season continued in Week 15 with a 38-24 loss in Arizona. The hype surrounding this team was extremely unwarranted and they are proving that they were clearly overrated. Cleveland still has an outside shot to make the playoffs, but a loss to the Baltimore Ravens next week would end those hopes. The Browns should be looking ahead to the offseason.
There are many areas where this team needs to improve. This season should be a huge wake up call to the Browns that you must earn credibility, it cannot be given before you have accomplished anything. If the Browns want to finally return to the postseason, these are three changes that need to be made.
3. Offensive Line Help
Baker Mayfield has underachieved this season but he has not had much protection. The Browns' offensive line has been shaky at times. They are now a banged up unit who has been forced to shuffle around a lot because of injury. This is not a recipe for success.
Cleveland could be facing a decision on Kareem Hunt. They can bring back the running back, but this could hinder their chance to improve the offensive line. It would be smart for the Browns to build a strong offensive line for their young quarterback and top tier running back Nick Chubb.
2. Odell Beckham Jr. Trade
Article Continues BelowThis is something that has to be done. Cleveland thought pairing Beckham with his former LSU teammate Jarvis Landry would give defenses fits. It turns out that two players who have been on bad teams throughout their careers will not become winners together.
It has been rumored that Beckham wants out of Cleveland. He has denied those accusations but his play on the field looks like he is already in offseason mode. Beckham has been a headache since he entered the league. His off the field drama is not worth his two touchdown season in 2019. Cleveland should make Beckham available in the offseason and take the best return.
1. New Head Coach
This is the biggest offseason need for the Browns. It is time for the Browns to admit they made a mistake and move on. Unfortunately for fans, Cleveland seems loyal to Freddie Kitchens and this will halt progress until they come to their senses.
Kitchens is a former offensive assistant who coached running backs and tight ends for multiple teams. He has never even been an offensive coordinator and the Browns thought he was a good candidate to run their team — with a recommendation from Mayfield. Well in 2019, Mayfield has looked bad and Kitchens has been worse. It is unknown if the Browns will move on from Kitchens, but a new coach remains their biggest need. If they keep Kitchens for one more year, then this will be their biggest need again next offseason.
