The curious case of Eli Apple is continuing in New York, as the Giants benched the youngster on Saturday. It was a move that interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo said was a coach's decision, but just not his.

Basically, he is laying blame — or credit, depending on how you look at it — to the feet of his defensive coordinators.

“I left that to the defensive coaches. He was going to get in there in some dime situations,” Spagnuolo said, via NJ.com. “The guys that have been in there have been playing together for a little bit, the continuity has been good. We probably need to try to get him in there, but we’ll see how this week goes and we’ll make that decision.”

Eli Apple did play some special teams, it is worth noting.

Anyway,  Brandon Dixon and Darryl Morris got the playing time in Apple's place at cornerback. Since Spagnuolo is saying continuity is important, it is weird to say that, since both of those guys have been with the team for a month and Apple was a first-round draft pick in 2016.

To be fair to the interim coach, Apple has been inconsistent in his play. There's probably more going on here as well, but he can't go out in public and bash one of his guys.

Total conjecture with that last part, but Spagnuolo did hint at that being the case, saying  “maybe there was something I’m not aware of right now.”
