Recently, the Indianapolis Colts shook up the NFL world when it was announced that they would be bringing quarterback Philip Rivers out of retirement to join their practice squad. The news comes in the wake of the Daniel Jones injury, which will sideline him for the rest of the season, and at a time when backup quarterbacks Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson are both sidelined due to injury as well.
Some were wondering what jersey number Rivers would take, considering that he traditionally wore the same number 17 jersey that Jones now occupies.
However, a new report has unearthed that Rivers might still be able to don that number.
“New #Colts QB Philip Rivers will get to keep his usual No. 17 now that he’s back in the NFL. Daniel Jones had been wearing No. 17, but with him on IR, the number can be given to Rivers,” reported Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team on X, formerly Twitter, citing a report from Mike Chappell of FOX59.
It remains to be seen whether or not Rivers will be the Colts' starting quarterback moving forward. If the answer to that question is yes, Rivers will join a select group of quarterbacks, including Tom Brady, to have suited up at the age of 44, and it's unclear how much Rivers has left in the tank at this stage of his career.
In any case, the Colts will next take the field on Sunday afternoon for a tough game on the road against the Seattle Seahawks at 4:25 pm ET.
