The Kansas City Chiefs have added some depth by claiming tight end Daniel Helm off waivers, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.

Helm, 25, originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2019 but was released before the season started. He was then picked up by the San Francisco 49ers and was kept on the practice squad for the majority of the season, but never played. The 49ers eventually made the decision to release him this past week.

Nevertheless, despite not playing in a single game in his NFL career, Helm had a fairly productive collegiate campaign, starting off at the University of Tennessee before transferring to Duke University. Throughout his college career, Helm caught 75 passes 804 yards.

Since the Chiefs are already stacked at the tight end position with Travis Kelce, Ricky Seals-Jones and Deon Yelder, this move seems to appear to be for depth purposes.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has had a busy offseason, handing out multiple lucrative deals to retain the team’s core that won the Super Bowl LIV last season.

He first signed Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes to a record-breaking 10-year deal worth up to $503 million, making it the largest contract in sports history. A week later, he then handed an enormous contract extension to Chris Jones, then just recently, he handed a contract extension to Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs will play their first regular-season game against the Houston Texans on Sept. 10.
