The future of Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith is all up in the air at the moment. The veteran QB is widely expected to be traded this offseason in order to make way for the team’s quarterback of the future, 2017 first-round pick Patrick Mahomes.

Smith has been linked with several teams in desperate need of a quarterback upgrade, but he no choice but to be a mere spectator as he waits for his future to be resolved. In an interview with Dan Patrick, Smith lamented this fact and wishes he had more of a say on how his whole situation plays out.

“I wish I knew,” Smith said. “I’ve got a year under contract there in Kansas City. I wish I was in control of this thing. I wish I was the one who got to do this. That’s just not the reality.”

Unfortunately for Smith, that’s just not how the league works. Apart from free agency, most NFL players don’t have the power or influence to control their future destination. Smith will likely be traded to the team that can offer the Chiefs the most assets and he’ll have no choice but to go to that team.

But while Smith bemoans this reality, he has proven that he is a professional who will continue to do his job to the best of his ability. He showed that when he was supplanted in San Francisco only to thrive in Kansas City. Whichever team he eventually ends up in should be pleased to have him.
